All Dogs Have ADHD

Non-fiction Resource

All Dogs Have ADHD takes an inspiring and affectionate look at Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), using images and ideas from the canine world to explore a variety of traits that will be instantly recognisable to those who are familiar with ADHD. Following the style of the award-winning All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome, charming colour photographs of dogs bring to life familiar ADHD characteristics such as being restless and excitable, getting easily distracted, and acting on impulse. This delightful book combines humour with understanding to reflect the difficulties and joys of raising a child with ADHD and celebrates what it means to be considered `different’. This absorbing and enjoyable book takes a refreshing approach to understanding ADHD.

Why I wrote it…

After I had written All Cats Have Asperger Syndrome several people mentioned that if cats have Aspergers, then surely dogs have ADHD. And so the idea was born. I soon realized that even though I had a teaching background and had heard the term bantered about for years, I had no real understanding of what it was like to have ADHD. I had to do a lot of research for this book and talked to many professionals who dealt with ADHD on a regular basis and also people who had ADHD themselves. Then, I tried to capture the essence of ADHD, so that in a few minutes a reader can get a glimmer of understanding into the highs and lows of life with ADHD.

Awards and Recognition

2009

All Dogs Have ADHD
Jessica Kingsley Publications, UK 2009

  • The Diagram Award – The Oddest Book Title of the Year: Long-listed

(This is a very strange award, but I’m quite proud of it. Although personally, I think All Cats have Asperger Syndrome is even odder.)
