Do you want a vibrant, experienced speaker for schools visits, library sessions, Book Week, or literary events and festivals?

Kathy offers a wide variety of author talks and workshops for grades 2-9 that range from a half hour reading to a nine hour workshop series. A former primary school teacher, she is an accomplished presenter on a diverse range of topics and has visited numerous schools in Australia, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates. She has also presented at Voices on the Coast, Voices on the Range, St Catherine’s Catholic College Literature and Arts Festival, and the Emirates Airlines Festival of Literature.

A sample of sessions that Kathy offers:

  • Kathy is available to read her books and to promote awareness and acceptance of those who feel different and alienated in a classroom environment.
  • Kathy has visited more than twenty countries and has ridden a camel in the deserts of Arabia, owns a warrior’s helmet from Afghanistan, has walked the souks of Oman, and explored deserted ruins in Jordan. She has treasure chests full of exotic trinkets to inspire children to create worlds and characters of their own.
  • Kathy has written over twenty books translated into nineteen languages, published in four countries with eight publishing houses, so she has a wealth of experience to share.  Kathy reveals the trials and joys of the publishing process from the blank page to the book in hand in her much requested Secret Life of an Author presentation.

Kathy has twenty years of classroom experience and has also written many books on Asperger’s Syndrome with the best known being, All Cats have Asperger Syndrome.  Her teacher handbook, The Essential Manual for Asperger Syndrome (ASD) in the Classroom won a gold medal IPPY Award (US) for teaching resources, and combines her two areas of expertise, writing on ASD and teaching, to create an invaluable tool to help teachers understand and support their students with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Inclusion of children with ASD into the classroom can be a challenge and a delight.  With the correct tools and experience, the teacher can make this a rewarding and fulfilling experience for all involved.  Attending Kathy’s workshops will enable adults to identify, support, encourage and teach children with ASD in mainstream schools. The talks can be adapted to specific needs.

Who should attend?

Any adult who may deal with an Asperger child, from teachers, specialists, support staff and even the person at the front desk and those on playground duty.

Testimonials

The Experience Collectors Queensland Autism Excellence Award Night
I can’t thank you enough for making the evening genuinely inspirational Kathy – you left everyone in that room in awe.

The Secret Science Society’s Spectacular Experiment presentation with Josie Montano at the Pine Community School, Arana Hills, Queensland
We appreciated so many things about your time and presence. I asked adults and kids for some specifics:
Firstly, it was lovely to experience your interest and excitement about our experiment activities outside.
It was clear that you value each person you meet no matter what size or age and this is a beautiful thing.
From the students…
I’m really thankful that they came; it’s cool to meet an author for the first time!
I liked the funny video, and that they showed us how they research.
I liked that they are both such different and unique people and can write together.
I liked it all!
I loved how they dressed.
I liked how they speak about doing the science experiments.
I liked hearing a preview of the second book.
I liked their shoes and space dress, and who they are, kind and lovely.
I loved their story and looking forward to the next one!

I liked that they took time to listen to our stories, and accepted questions that were really stories, with warmth and interest.

From the adults…
Their delivery pace really matched us.
They are so comfortable in their interactions and engaging. It makes us feel comfortable.
Their talk was such good preparation for writing and the progression of slides was a great pace for us and still taking time to listen to our questions was so good for continuing engagement. The slides really set up confidence and excitement for the writing activity and some of the kids are still writing!
I was so impressed by the excitement (of ideas and wanting to share and write them down) that came across the room when you invited them to the writing activity.
Thank you!
I hope we see more of you both in future. x

We recently held a Literature & Arts Festival at St. Catherine’s Catholic College, The Whitsundays for our Secondary students. All the authors that attended were entertaining, engaging and inspiring. I have had so much positive feedback from students, staff and library colleagues. The students have all been raving about how excellent the festival was, and they were disappointed at the thought of returning to classes for the rest of the week. I have had reluctant readers coming into the library to borrow books, more students are writing stories. I would definitely recommend David Burton, Josh Donellan, Kathy Hoopmann, James Moloney, Giulio Saggin, and Edwina Shaw to anyone looking at having authors present for their Secondary students.

Great personal authentic presentation. Kathy spoke clearly, concisely and with plenty of personal testimonies which give insight. Extremely helpful insights from the point of the child, the parent and the teacher.

The sensory section was fantastic! I would love more class teachers to experience this to gain a deeper understanding of how some children feel and what they go through every day. I would just like to day how brilliant Kathy Hoopmann was ! Thanks!

The sensory overload section was great. We could relate to what a person with Asperger’s deals with in regards to sensory issues. Kathy had us put marbles in our shoes, a plastic toy somewhere on our person, she flashed a torch at us, there were people making deliberate noise, it was very hard to concentrate which made completing a task very difficult! It really put things into perspective, most of us couldn’t stand the noise and I was completely fixated on the marbles in my shoes, they drove me crazy. I will be much more sympathetic and aware of how things are like, how the uniform shirt can bother a child or socks and shoes that don’t feel right, it can really affect how a child can concentrate. I found it all very useful. It was very well presented.
