Omar’s Goats

Children’s Book

When Omar takes his goats out to graze each day, he is dismayed to find rubbish everywhere. Broken bottles, corroded cans, sickly cigarettes, plastic bags. It’s terrible ! When his goats get cut and hurt and sick, finally he cries, ‘Enough !’ And sets out to solve the problem in a most surprising way. The humorous illustrations and witty alliteration bring to life how just one person, with a mission, can make a big difference to the environment. In collaboration with HSBC Bank UAE, and with their generous support, this book, along with An Environmental Handbook for Teachers, was distributed to nine countries in the Middle East, in English and Arabic to heighten environmental issues.

Sorry. this book is out of print.

Why I wrote it…

One great thing about living in the United Arab Emirates, is the opportunity for travel. Drive an hour or so and you can pitch a tent in the deserts of Oman. Hop on a plane and Qatar is an hour away. Four hours will get you wandering around the pyramids. But unfortunately along with the joys of exploring new places comes the unwelcome knowledge that rubbish is everywhere! I’ve camped in wadis where I’ve spent the first hour or so simply cleaning up other people’s rubbish from the small area I was staying. Donna Acheson Juillet was even more passionate about the problem. “We’ve got to do something!” she fumed. So we decided that we would write a book to teach really young kids that caring for the environment was important and could be fun. We figured if they learnt young enough then they would take great habits all through their lives. Hopefully we were right!
